George Lloyd Music Manuscript on Display at the British Library

George Lloyd’s Symphony No.4 will go on display from 22 June to 31 December 2013 in the Library's Treasure Gallery, marking the composer's centenary. This follows the British Library’s acquisition of the collection of Lloyd’s original music manuscripts which will be preserved and documented and made available to the nation.

During the process of sorting and cataloguing the George Lloyd material for the acquisition, a number of previously unknown works have been discovered including an orchestral arrangement of HMS Trinidad March which will have its UK première at the Last Night of the Proms, on 7th September.  (The orchestral version was played by the Orchestra of the Swiss Romande in 1946

The British Library’s music collections contain music from all periods and all genres and include original music manuscripts along with correspondence, diaries and unpublished sound recordings of composers who were born or were active in Britain.  Among the large collection are the original scores, correspondence and papers of Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Ireland and Britten along with the papers of other significant musical figures such as Sir Henry Wood, Sir Malcolm Sargent and Sir Adrian Boult.

The acquisition of George Lloyd’s manuscripts is part of an on-going process, implemented by the British Library, of acquiring, documenting and preserving for the nation the archives of musical figures important to the history of cultural life in Britain.
