Brass

Long-serving BBC Producer Paul Hindmarsh has written an excellent feature about George Lloyd in the latest edition of British Bandsman Magazine. Although mainly a brass specialist, Paul compiled and introduced the BBC Radio 3 Tribute to George Lloyd after his death, and this new feature is a useful retrospective about Lloyd's life and work.

Entitled "The Price of Independence," the article considers how Lloyd's own temperament and business skill led him persistently to plough a lonely furrow, when the musical fashions changed and he found himself at odds with the musical establishment.

Society News

Classic FM is inviting voting for its Hall of Fame.  There are four of George’s pieces in the list (shown below).  If all of the Society were to vote for them that might get his music ‘up the charts’ a bit!

    Go to http://halloffame.classicfm.com//2013/vote/

  1. Type Lloyd in the search box half way down the page, then click Search.
  2. Click the name Lloyd, George
  3. Select the pieces you like best  (I voted for Symphony 4)

Many thanks to Peter Fender for spotting this.  Please vote if you can. Deadline is only a few weeks away, so the the sooner the better.

English Music Festival

The George Lloyd Society has joined the  'Composer Organisations' group, and there will shortly be a link to our pages from the EMF site atwww.englishmusicfestival.org.uk

Biographical

We have recently discovered and transcribed a letter from Harry Farjeon, one of George's teachers at Trinity College, which gives a detailed analysis of the opera 'Iernin'.  "All musical London is talking about it" he said, and then takes each scene at a time and rates it ABC or D according to his judgement of the level of skill and inspiration.  A fascinating insight into the work, and the prevailing aesthetics of 1935.  We hope you post a link to the transcript soon.

Thanks to Garham Eagland for this one:

We started this one a few months ago but have not had time to develop it, so maybe we should amalgamate.
