The George Lloyd Society

Lloyd Centenary Year 2013

 Concerts and Events

In 2013 it will be 100 years since the birth of the Cornish composer George Lloyd (1913 – 1998) and preparations are well in hand for a series of concerts throughout the country to mark his centenary.

Confirmed dates include performances of his Symphonic Mass, Requiem, Symphonies 5,6 and 10, and his complete works for Brass Band.  A Cornwall Coordinating Group has been formed to manage the George Lloyd Centenary events in the West Country, which include the unveiling of a Memorial Stone in St.Ives on June 28th, the composer's birthday, and a performance of his best known work, A Symphonic Mass, in Truro Cathedral in November, with other events to be confirmed.

Details of dates, venues and times will be found on the Society website at  www.georgelloyd.com

  George Lloyd Society

Message Board and Forum now re-opened.

In anticipation of increased activity for George Lloyd’s centenary year, we have re-launched the George Lloyd Society Message Board and Forum.  This was closed down in 2007 after it suffered a tsunami of spam and unsolicited advertising,  but a re-furbished website with anti-spam technology has allowed us cautiously to try again.  We would welcome your participation.

Society Members and previous email correspondents have been automatically added to our newsletter subscription list. If you would prefer not to receive this newsletter in future you can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the link at the foot of the page.

Typesetting Project

We are pleased to announce that work has started on typesetting George Lloyd’s scores in Sibelius notation software. Although all the orchestral parts for his music have all been professionally copied for performance, the Full Scores remained as photocopies of his original manuscript, and while the great majority are clear and legible, certain of his later works, written during his last year of illness, were a little less so. Although they are quite legible,  e felt that conductors might find it easier to read those scores if they were typeset.  We have therefore set his two last works, the Requiem and the Cello Concerto together with In Memoriam, an orchestral arrangement of the second movement of his Suite for Brass band, Royal ParksCopies of the new editions are available from the George Lloyd Music Library

Diary of a Friendship

We are pleased to announce the publication of A Diary of a Friendship by Deborah and Bruce Reader.  The Readers heard a BBC broadcast of Lloyd’sEighth Symphony and wrote to the composer. He replied, and so began a correspondence which soon developed into a friendship.

A few years later they joined Albany Distribution, and managed the sales of the complete Albany Records catalogue, together with many other labels from USA and Europe, into UK record stores.  Bruce designed a number of the covers of CD records by George Lloyd, and he also toured the length and breadth of the country to speak about Lloyd’s work to Recorded Music Societies. Bruce is now a Classical Music reviewer and has his own review website, as well as working regularly for major distributors.

This book is a straightforward account of their long association with the composer, and includes reviews of all 12 symphonies and a List of Works.  It is printed to order by Lulu.com.  See the George Lloyd Society Website for details of how to order.

Thank you once again for your interest and all good wishes for 2013.

William Lloyd
