George Lloyd Music Manuscript on Display at the British Library
George Lloyd’s Symphony No.4 will go on display from 22 June to 31 December 2013 in the Library's Treasure Gallery, marking the composer's centenary. This follows the British Library’s acquisition of the collection of Lloyd’s original music manuscripts which will be preserved and documented and made available to the nation.
During the process of sorting and cataloguing the George Lloyd material for the acquisition, a number of previously unknown works have been discovered including an orchestral arrangement of HMS Trinidad March which will have its UK première at the Last Night of the Proms, on 7th September. (The orchestral version was played by the Orchestra of the Swiss Romande in 1946
The British Library’s music collections contain music from all periods and all genres and include original music manuscripts along with correspondence, diaries and unpublished sound recordings of composers who were born or were active in Britain. Among the large collection are the original scores, correspondence and papers of Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Ireland and Britten along with the papers of other significant musical figures such as Sir Henry Wood, Sir Malcolm Sargent and Sir Adrian Boult.
The acquisition of George Lloyd’s manuscripts is part of an on-going process, implemented by the British Library, of acquiring, documenting and preserving for the nation the archives of musical figures important to the history of cultural life in Britain.
On the week leading up to his 100th birthday, George Lloyd will feature on BBC Radio 3: ‘Composer of the Week’. Presented by Donald Macleod, the programme will be broadcast daily from 24 – 28 June at 12 noon and will include a selection of the composer's finest and his lesser known works.
The weekend before, BBC Radio 3: Music Matters will also be featuring the music of George Lloyd on Saturday 22 June at 12.15pm. Tom Service will present a programme exploring music-making in Cornwall, from folk and fishermen’s choirs to the works of Cornish classical composers including Lloyd, discovering a county where music is a strong part of cultural life.
Sounds of Brass, a weekly programme featured on local BBC Radio stations in the south-west of England, will be marking George Lloyd's centenary in two episodes on Sunday 23 June and Sunday 30 June at 7.05pm. The first of these broadcasts includes extracts from a 1993 interview the composer had with Phillip Hunt, the programme's presenter, and features HMS Trinidad, Royal Parks, Evening Song and Kings Messenger, while on 30 June English Heritage and Diversions on a Bass Theme will be broadcast.
George Lloyd’s centenary will also be celebrated internationally in Germany and Australia. German national radio station WDR3 will be presenting a section on Lloyd as part of the TonArt programme on 26 June, and 3MBS-FM, a community radio station in Melbourne, Australia will be broadcasting a two-hour documentary presented by John Barnes about George Lloyd’s life and music on the Illuminations programme on Friday 28 June, the composer's 100th birthday. New Zealand Radio are transmitting 'Composer of the Week' which will be broadcast 28 June 2013 to mark the 100th birthday of George, similar to BBC Radio 3.
