Strange Storms & Symphonies: The life of George Lloyd

This documentary film about the life and music of George Lloyd was shown at film festivals during the 2013 Centenary year, and is now available online on YouTube.  DVD discs can be supplied to order from Redcliffe Films. http://redcliffefilms.co.uk   (Paypal)

Produced by Redcliffe Films and directed by Diana Taylor, this 44 minute film follows the life of George Lloyd from his precocious childhood in St Ives in Cornwall, through the roller-coaster of his musical fortunes at Covent Garden and The Lyceum, the devastation of his wartime experiences, and finally his extraordinary Indian summer. The evocative soundtrack of his own work adds a rich background to a fascinating portrait of the man and his life.

The film includes many previously unpublished photographs and interviews with George Lloyd and his nephew William Lloyd, who was his business manager and executive producer for the final eventful 10 years of the composer’s life.

Acquisition of copyrights from United Music Publishers Ltd.

Following the change of ownership at United Music Publishers, we have now acquired the copyrights to three George Lloyd works, previously published by that company.  Under the terms of this agreement we will also take over the existing stock of printed music, including full scores, vocal scores, and orchestral & performance sets.  We hope to have this material sorted and catalogued within a few weeks, when it will become available for sale and for hire.  The relevant works are:

Pervigilium Veneris (Vigil of Venus)  1980
Chorus, Semi-Chorus, Soprano,Tenor, 4444/4/632/1.4.Hrp. Cel.Org,Strs
77 minutes

A Miniature Triptych  1981
Brass Quintet:  2 Trpt,Horn,Trbn,Tba
17'30''

Aubade   1971
Suite for 2 Pianos
38 minutes

The Pervigilum Veneris is probably Lloyd’s most ambitious work, and certainly the most large scale piece he wrote for the concert hall, rather than the opera house. He takes the text of a late Roman hymn to the coming of spring, considered to be the first flowering of Romanticism, and marking the transition from Roman to Medieval poetry. The text, sung in Latin, celebrates the festival of Venus, which ran over three days (and nights) and is a sensuous hymn to physical and romantic love and longing:
"Let those love now who never loved before, Let those who always loved, now love the more."
Pervigilium Veneris was recorded with Welsh National Opera by Decca Classics and issued in the British Music Collection series. The CD is not currently available except on the second hand market, (eBay etc.) but a download is available from: http://www.deccaclassics.com/en/cat/4734372

A Miniature Triptych is written for brass quintet.  It has never been issued as a commercial recording, and although it was recorded by the Equale Brass, under their founder, trombonist and Artistic Director Peter Bassano, that recording was never issued. It was premiered by Equale Brass in 1990 at the Malvern Festival. Following acquisition of the copyrights, we hope that a new recording may follow.

Aubade – Suite for Two Pianos.  “The dream-like Aubade, a 38 minute suite of eight movements, is reminiscent of twentieth-century French music in its elegance and bursts of pianistic exuberance and is evocative and entertaining too. Goldstone and Clemmow play the whole programme with persuasive virtuosity and a fine command of pianistic colour. Lloyd fans need not hesitate.”  Gramophone magazine.
CD available from us with other Lloyd works for two pianos, as TROY 248.

The scores and orchestral sets of all the above works will shortly be available from the George Lloyd Society, PO Box 137, Kendal, Cumbria, LA8 0XD. 01539 824008
