Welcome to our new look newsletter!

Despite the difficulties of the last year, the George Lloyd Society has remained busy, taking the opportunity to review our activities and to embrace the digital world. 

Our theme for this newsletter is Music and Well-being, focussing on George Lloyd's remarkable recovery from his wartime trauma and the therapeutic effects of his music. You will find links below to a YouTube playlist of some of George's most beautiful music, as well as an informative podcast and fascinating blog, which can all be found on our re-designed website.

Blog No 1: George Lloyd and music’s healing powers

As the drama of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic plays out, there is more discussion than ever about the therapeutic value of the arts, especially applied to our mental health. The evidence shows beyond question that the arts are good for our well-being. Music in particular has a unique capacity to soothe the troubled mind by helping us access long-buried memories, feelings and emotions, as well as providing templates that are able to give them order. Among British composers of the last century, few have illustrated music’s healing powers better than George Lloyd.

George Lloyd Playlists

Playlist No 1: Serene and Mindful

A selection of slow movements with a theme of healing, well-being and mindfulness. A 50 minute curated playlist of music by British composer George Lloyd (1913 - 1998) with a series of landscape images of the English Lake District. The perfect way to unwind!

 Buxton International Festival

On 24 July, as part of Buxton International Festival, broadcaster Petroc Trelawny and journalist and author Simon Heffer discussed neglected English composers, with particular reference to George Lloyd. Mr Heffer reminisced about his personal friendship with George and encouraged the audience to listen to his 4th Symphony. William Lloyd and colleagues attended and were able to thank Mr Heffer for his enthusiastic support over the years.

Theater Magdeburg

Theatre Magdeburg in Germany will be reviving its colourful and provocative ballet production of Bram Stoker's Dracula in March 2022, featuring music by well-known composers including the finale of Lloyd's 7th Symphony.  Trailer here. 

Seventh Symphony score typeset edition

We are pleased to announce that the full score of George Lloyd's Symphony No. 7 is now available for download free of charge to registered users, in the the original manuscript version and in a new typeset edition (available 27th September.)  Please register here to access the downloads. 

Updated Website

We hope you will explore our new-look website at georgelloyd.com, which features the podcast, blog and a 'Watch and Listen' page with free opportunities to listen to George's music as well as links to interviews and other programmes about the composer. Look out for more content coming soon.
